Privacy Policy

for the Kanjira app and its widgets · Last updated: October 10, 2026

In short

Kanjira needs no account and contains no advertising, analytics or tracking. The app itself sends no data to us. What you do in the app stays on your device or, if you use iCloud, in your private iCloud storage with Apple.

Data on your device

Words, writing templates, pronunciation recordings and the map of the journey through Japan are built into the app. We do not operate a server for the app, and the app includes no third-party services or SDKs. The app does not send us your searches, stamped words, drawings or journey progress.

On your device, the app stores:

Most of this data is kept in a storage area shared by the app and its widgets and protected by the operating system (App Group). The settings of individual widgets, such as level, view and rotation, are stored by the operating system. Finger movements in the writing area are processed in memory only, to check your strokes; the app saves your progress, neither the drawing nor a handwriting profile. The app does not ask for permission to use your location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts or notifications; the journey does not use your location either.

This processing provides the features you use. Where personal data is involved, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. Unless stated otherwise above, the data is kept until you delete the app; the operating system then removes it from your device.

iCloud sync

When you are signed in to iCloud on your device, the app uses Apple’s iCloud key-value storage to keep the following in sync across your devices:

Individual word stamps, revealed translations, the script chosen for kana writing, the introduction status, the cached Kanjira Pro expiration date and the settings of individual widgets stay on each device. Without iCloud, the app works fully on your device. Kanjira currently has no separate switch for syncing; if you are not signed in to iCloud, nothing is synced.

The legal basis is again Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. We cannot access your iCloud storage or your Apple Account. Apple provides the service and processes the data under its own terms, see Apple’s Privacy Policy. For users in the European Economic Area, Apple Distribution International Limited in Ireland is responsible for this. According to Apple, personal data is generally stored by Apple Inc. in the United States, and Apple bases transfers from the European Economic Area on Standard Contractual Clauses. The values remain in iCloud until they are deleted. Deleting the app alone does not reliably remove them, and they may return if you reinstall the app; the options for deleting them depend on your iCloud settings and system version.

Purchases

Kanjira Pro is an App Store subscription. Apple handles purchase, payment and subscription management. Through StoreKit, the app receives transaction information verified by Apple and uses the product identifier, the expiration date and any revocation to unlock Pro. The expiration date is cached locally for the widgets. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. The app does not give us your payment details, your address or your Apple Account details. Separately, Apple provides us with sales and financial reports under the developer agreement; these contain no names, email addresses or payment details of buyers. We use them for accounting and tax purposes (to the extent they contain personal data: Article 6(1)(c) GDPR). Apple’s own processing is covered by Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Crash reports and statistics from Apple

If you have allowed your device to share analytics with app developers, Apple provides us with crash reports and statistics on the use of the app. According to Apple, this data is aggregated or does not personally identify you. We use it to find and fix errors (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can turn sharing off at any time under Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements.

Pronunciation

“Listen” plays, where one exists for the word, a recording of the Japanese word that was produced in advance and is built into the app; no network connection is made. If a recording is missing, your device’s Japanese system voice reads the word. The app uses no microphone and no speech recognition, and does not send text to a speech service. The operating system manages and may download system voice resources.

Links to other websites

In its sources and licenses section, the app links to the websites of the dictionaries, data sources and licenses it uses (such as EDRDG, KanjiVG, Creative Commons and GitHub); below the subscription offer it links to Apple’s license agreement; and in both places it links to this page. Links open in your browser. If you open a link, that website’s privacy terms apply.

Email contact

If you email us, we process your email address, your message and anything you choose to include in order to handle your request. A future feature for reporting a translation may open a prepared email in your email app containing the word, reading, translation, card language and card identifier; you can edit it before sending, and the app never sends anything itself. This feature is currently not active.

Depending on your request, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) GDPR (contract) or our legitimate interest in answering inquiries and fixing errors (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We receive and store email sent to hello@paulkothe.de through Apple’s iCloud Mail. For users in the European Economic Area, iCloud is provided by Apple Distribution International Ltd., Hollyhill Industrial Estate, Hollyhill, Cork, Ireland. Apple processes the emails as provider under its own terms and its Privacy Policy. According to Apple, personal data is generally stored by Apple Inc. in the United States, and Apple bases transfers from the European Economic Area on Standard Contractual Clauses. We delete correspondence once the matter is resolved, at the latest after twelve months. We keep longer only what the law requires us to retain (for example under Section 147 of the German Fiscal Code), and only until that period ends.

This website (ridekanjira.app)

The following sections apply to the website. The controller is the same as above. The website uses no advertising, no social media plugins and no third-party tracking services.

Hosting and server logs

The website is hosted by Vercel Inc. (USA). With every request, Vercel processes technically necessary data so the page can be delivered and kept secure: IP address, time, requested address, referring page, and browser and device type (user agent). This data ends up in Vercel's server logs; we do not use it for statistics. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing the site securely and reliably (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Data may be transferred to the United States in the process.

Usage statistics (only with your consent)

We only count your visit if you choose “Allow” in the notice. Nothing is counted before that. Per day, we keep a tally of:

We use no cookies for this, assign no identifiers, store no IP address or user agent and build no profiles. We only store totals per day, which cannot be linked to a person. When a count is sent, your IP address reaches our host as with any request (see above); it does not go into the statistics. The totals are kept in a database at Neon Inc. (through the Vercel Marketplace, AWS data centre in Frankfurt) and deleted after 24 months.
The legal basis is your consent (Article 6(1)(a) GDPR, Section 25(1) TDDDG). You can withdraw or give it at any time via “Privacy settings” at the bottom of every page.

Feedback form

If you write to us through the form, we store the type of message, your text, the page language, the time and, if you provide it, your email address. We only use the email address to reply to you. We do not store your IP address or browser details. To prevent spam, we count for at most one hour how many messages come from one connection; instead of the IP address we only keep an encrypted check value (HMAC) that changes every hour and is deleted once the hour is over.
The legal basis is our legitimate interest in reading and answering feedback and improving the app (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). Messages are kept in the Neon database mentioned above. We delete them once we no longer need them, at the latest twelve months after they arrive, and immediately on request: write to hello@paulkothe.de.

Storage in your browser

Your choice in the statistics notice (“allowed” or “declined”) is saved in your browser's local storage (localStorage) so the notice doesn't appear on every visit. It never leaves your device and stays until you clear this website's data in your browser. This is necessary for the function you chose (Section 25(2) No. 2 TDDDG). Visitors receive no cookies; only the operator's admin area sets a technically necessary session cookie after signing in.

Fonts and content

Fonts, images and audio recordings are served by this website itself. Your browser does not connect to Google Fonts or any other third party for them.

Your rights

Where we process personal data, you have the right of access (Article 15 GDPR), rectification (Article 16), erasure (Article 17), restriction of processing (Article 18) and data portability (Article 20), subject to the legal conditions. To exercise them, write to hello@paulkothe.de.

You may lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Article 77 GDPR), in particular where you live. Our competent authority is the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit), Alt-Moabit 59–61, 10555 Berlin, Germany, www.datenschutz-berlin.de.

We can neither see nor delete data held only on your device or in your iCloud storage. For processing by Apple, please contact Apple. You do not have to provide any personal details to use the app. If you write to us, we need your email address to reply. There is no automated decision-making, including profiling.

Right to object

Where we process data on the basis of legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR), you may object to this processing at any time on grounds relating to your particular situation (Article 21 GDPR).

About the App Store label

“Data Not Collected” on the App Store follows Apple’s definition of collection: we do not collect data through the app. It does not mean that your device, iCloud or Apple process no data at all.

The German version of this policy (Datenschutzerklärung) is the authoritative one.

Rechtsgrundlage ist deine Einwilligung (Art. 6 Abs. 1 Buchst. a DSGVO, § 25 Abs. 1 TDDDG).

Deine Rechte

Soweit wir personenbezogene Daten verarbeiten, hast du nach den gesetzlichen Voraussetzungen das Recht auf Auskunft (Art. 15 DSGVO), Berichtigung (Art. 16), Löschung (Art. 17), Einschränkung der Verarbeitung (Art. 18) und Datenübertragbarkeit (Art. 20). Schreib uns dazu an hello@paulkothe.de.
